Help Us Kickstart an Animated Short Film for Run Body Run!

Following in the footsteps of Holly’s successful independent release, Run Body Run, we are producing an independent animated short film for the title track based on a painting by Toronto artist Jamie Bennett.

Directed by Holly’s former bassist and current animator extraordinaire, Mark Pullyblank, Run Body Run is a coming of age tale that chronicles the struggles of a young heroine who, in her pursuit of ideal conformity, discovers that the traits she rejects are in fact her greatest assets.

To get this project off the ground, we need your help! Visit the project at Kickstarter to get all the information, see some amazing concept art and latest updates!

Contest Winners!

Thank you to everyone who entered the Run Body Run Contest. The response was overwhelming!

But we’ll let Holly herself tell you all about it:

It was so hard to choose the winners for this contest.. I ended up reading through them with my Mom and thank god because I ended up in tears many times. We would sit on the phone for hours going back and forth over every single story… Great way to bond with Faye (that’s my mom) and an even better way to bond with you guys and gals.

Thank you Puga for all of your help, this wouldn’t have worked without you, and to all the kind folks at Manitobah Mukluks (my cousin Sean’s company, I’m totally bragging) for the amazing gifts and support. Thank you to Todd Pinnell at The Rivoli for the sweet dinner hook up and to John Kastner and NxNE for all the love and the passes!

A big fat MIIGWECH for all your beautiful stories and for all the social media sharing, that’s how we do it now… This reached thousands upon thousands of people!

And the grand Prize winner is… Gerald Ratt from Saskatoon, SK!

Gerald’s entry got him a trip to Toronto and accommodation for two along with two full festival passes to North by Northeast. He also gets two pairs of mukluks from Mantiboah Mukluks (for his sisters, he says!) along with the very first signed copy of Run Body Run.

Runner-Up Winners
Our runner-up winners came from across Canada and even the United States. These Holly fans will receive hand-written lyrics of the song they wrote about, a pair of moccasins from Manitobah Mukluks and a signed copy of Run Body Run!

Our grand prize winner Gerald’s entry was so heartfelt that we asked him to expand on it and tell us some of the back story behind his submission. This is what he wrote:

Hello, My name is Gerald Ratt and I am from Northern Saskatchewan but now reside in Saskatoon, SK. I have been a huge Holly fan over the years and here is my entry for the new Holly contest.

I was about 14 years old and struggling with my identity as a gay youth who was also First Nation living on reserve in northern Sask. During this time of struggle of hopelessness in my life i happened to hear a beautifully haunting voice on the radio and i soon realized that the song was called “Numb” and sang by the talented Holly McNarland. I was drawn into the song from her voice and at the time the lyrics spoke to me, as i was feeling numb. “I feel better when im numb….” “cry for more pain heal what you have…” I had to numb myself from being bulllied, living with the social issues on reserve, and struggling with finding myself. There is something magical about Holly’s voice, it pulled me in at a time where i could have taken my own life. I do believe that music saves us all from hardship that we may be going through in life. Holly`s voice helped save mine.

I could not afford to buy Holly’s record so I shoplifted “Stuff” on cassette tape (No disrespect to Holly) I have grown so much as a person and over come many struggles with life on reserve, being gay, bullied and coming from a household that was not healthy. Holly has the voice on an angel, and is my favorite singer to date. she is a true artist and i have every record, her dvd, saw her live about 7 times and i promote her to everyone of my friends and on facebook to love her voice the way i have for so many years.

Her beautiful voice has carried me through so many hard times over the years, and i play her albums over and over to relax and to take me back to that place in my heart where i know that i am now a beautiful person. I came out to my family in 2007 with a letter than i ran off to live in Mexico, her album Chin Up Buttercup got me through this. I am now leaving my support in Saskatchewan once again and moving to work in Ontario and the Ukraine for Canada World Youth. Her new album, Run Body Run will now get me through the next chapter of my life.

I have Holly McNarland to thank for her magical voice digging into my soul, writing great songs, releasing amazing records and for being a great artist. Every song is amazing and i have many favorites. But it was the song Numb that i was introduced to such an amazingly talented individual, and i love every song. Her records get me through a lot, not just an indivdual song.

15 years later, I am excited about this contest, there is hope to meet Holly McNarland and to see her live after so many years would be a blessing.

Cheers, and thanks for putting on a great contest.

We thank you, too, Gerald.

Congratulations once again to all the winners and many thanks to everyone for entering!
